Makeup With Staying Power

You've got IMPORTANT Events coming up - Does your makeup have STAYING POWER? We know you're busy attending important events like Prom, Graduation, and Weddings this Summer. Are you positively prepared to avoid the melting of the makeup? There's nothing worse than funky foundation formulations or elusive eyeshadow that disappears after 30 minutes. We're here to help with some masterful makeup tips to help you have STAYING POWER THIS SUMMER!

Prime Time Foundation Primer1. Prime Time: PRIME your face... we recommend bareMinerals Prime Time Foundation Primer. It's a super way to start your special occasion - light, mineral-infused foundation primer developed to combat enlarged pores, fill fine lines, and excess oil. Apply before SPF 15 foundation for a long-lasting flawless face. Find it in our boutique!

2. Prime the eyes too: The bareMinerals Prime Time Eyes eyelid primer is a unique formula that goes on smooth & sheer, is lightweight but prov
Bare Minerals Prime Time Eyesides super-star staying power for luxurious lasting color. The bareMinerals-infused, base keeps excess oil from affecting your color & staying power with respect to foundation, eyeshadow and liner. We carry the full line of bareMinerals makeup and primer.

3. It's all in the timing: Apply your foundation at least 10 minutes after you moisturize. If you don't allow the moisturizer to absorb into the skin, your foundation will wear off in a matter of hours.

4. BLOT if you GOT shine: We want you to SHINE, but not in THAT way. To make your flawless face last, blot your makeup with a Kleenex or paper towel throughout the day to remove excess oil. You can also use the nifty oil-blotting sheets!

5. Apply Foundation to eyes and lips. You need to give a base coat of foundation after priming for eye makeup and lipstick to adhere to. This will double the staying power of your eyeshadow & lipstick. And, here's a tip for the artisan who is great with the itty-bitty brush: Liquid eye liner has 4 times the staying power than pencil eye liners! If you've got the skills with liquid eyeliner - USE IT for these special occasions for extra-long eye makeup life.

6. Seal it with powder: After applying foundation and liner to lips, dust with loose powder, then apply lipstick. In fact - we LOVE bareMinerals Mineral Veil for this little job!

Skin Cancer AwarenessDon't Forget! May is National Skin Cancer Awareness Month. bareMinerals SPF 15 Foundation aids in the prevention of sun-induced skin damage and carries the Skin Cancer Foundation's seal of recommendation.

SIP-N-SWAP - New Date!

As you might know - we've planned a super cool event called Sip-N-Swap!

It was originally planned for Tuesday May 12th, but due to recent Swine Flu school cancellations and event delays - we understand your schedule is chaotic at best right now. To accomodate, we've moved the date to Tuesday June 16th. Visit our website for the details!

What is it? It's an exclusive clothes-swapping event for those of you who prefer NOT to deal with long lines or crowded stores, or pay the high prices for new duds. It's for those of us who'd love to socialize a bit, drink a glass of wine - then indulge in that animal-like instinct of getting some new-to you items for only the ticket price of $20.00! It's a FASHION FRENZY! Look below for more tips on how to maximize your sipping and swapping experience.

What's even better - is that all leftover clothing will be donated to The Family Place.

OK, I'm In! What do I do?

First, buy your ticket. Visit www.sip-n-swap.com to purchase your tickets online. Tickets are 20.00, or you can call Frinj Salon & Spa at 469-361-0017.

Next, pick out at least five gently-worn or even new items from your closet that you don't wear. It can be apparel, jewelry, handbags, shoes or other accessories. No holes or stains, please - clothes must be something you consider in great condition, something you'd want to swap FOR!

Finally, come to Frinj Salon & Spa (visit website for directions, map and phone number) on Tuesday, June 16th at 7:00 PM to SIP-N-SWAP!

DATE: Tuesday June 16th from 7:00 PM until 9:30 PM
WHERE: Frinj Salon & Spa

Sippin' & Swappin' TIPS:

1/ Buy your ticket online or call to purchase tickets. Once you've received your ticket, we recommend you drop off your donation to Frinj Salon & Spa prior to the event, and we'll stamp your ticket that your clothing contribution has been received. That leaves only your showing up to sip a bit, then SWAP for some new glam-gear!

2/ The night of the event, dress with boxers or shorts and a tank top under your clothing. This will make it easier for you to try on things to make sure they fit. We'll have mirrors around so you can quickly verify your capture before you claim it!

Want to know more? Contact us at 469-361-0017 for more information, or visit our website. We can't wait - and hate that we've had to postpone it. But our clients and friends told us that right now was just not a good time with so many changes in important plans like graduation, school closures, childcare issues and everything surrounding the Swine Flu outbreak in North Texas. We've accomodated by pushing the event out by a few weeks.

But you know what that means.... MORE TIME EQUALS MORE CLOTHES. You can expect the clothing crop to be MUCH better given that we've got more time to 'Spring Clean' our closets!

Happy SWAPPING!

The Eyebrow Saga : Final Chapter

Have you ever heard of THREADING? I hadn't.

But I tried it - and now I'm here to report to you - it's benefits and how the process works - because we now offer this ancient method of grooming and shaping your eyebrows - here at FRINJ SALON & SPA.

I've never been a huge fan of waxing, primarily because it ALWAYS leaves me looking like I have chicken pox (or something worse...) on my lips and eyes. And you know - I haven't had much luck with my eyebrows at all - as you have probably already read.

However, when Simi, one of our designers at Frinj - told me she knew how to "THREAD" I was curious, and so I tried it.

I have to tell you - before you read one more word - that I've been SUPER HAPPY with the results - going on 2 weeks now with ZERO regrowth - and a beautiful shape! In fact - one of the best shapings of brows I have ever had. Not too much, and enough - I mean... I look like a girl now.

So I sat down, and Simi told me it might hurt a bit. No big whoop - I am a trooper when it comes to pain. I mean, I had a baby, right? What can a piece of thread be compared to THAT?

OMG! Someone get me a DRINK (and a STONG one) before I do this again....

Ok, so I'm elaborating a hair, here (no pun intended).

It did hurt. But waxing hurts too. It just hurts faster. Threading just hurts a little longer.

Simi took a piece of cotton thread, and began wrapping it around LINES of hairs - then using a twisting motion, lassoed the hairs like the Texan she now is, and lifted the hairs right out of the follicle. (pluck pluck pluck pluck)

And that's it. It took about 15 minutes, but Simi went slow and carefully - because if done incorrectly, the hairs can break, or you could get a tiny paper-cut like laceration from the thread. But Simi is of Middle-Eastern heritage, and she and her family have been practicing this ancient art for many years. And, it's not easy to find someone who's experienced with threading, and it's darn-near impossible to find someone who is as patient and gentle as Simi. This is her specialty - and it shows.

Threading can be used anywhere on the face, and is generally not performed to remove bodily hair, only facial.

Here's some pros and cons to help you decide if threading might be for you:

PROS:

It's Super Sanitary and Burn-Free: nothing but STRING! That's it - string only. No wax, no chemicals, no chance of being burned by wax. Plus, whille waxing removes the top layer of skin - threading does not.

NO RED BUMPS: I experienced a few little red areas for a bit after my threading session - but for the most part, I was back to normal within an hour or two. Where - compared to waxing - I have SERIOUS bumpage for at least 2 days.

Great Shape: Threading has a tendency (from what I've read) to offer the designer more flexibility in the design of your brow; the string can actually shape the entire brow in lines and selecting the area of hair to remove with fine precision.

Longer Lasting: Threading lasts longer than the typical wax or pluck - it pulls the entire hair at the root out. And, if done regularly - it can be longer, as it can damage the follicle and stunt future growth.

CONS:

Well, IT HURTS. But not any worse than waxing or plucking really. Tough it up! Get with the program!

It's hard to find a good threading technician: But we have one who's been practicing this tradition with her family. She didn't just take a class or two - she's the real deal. So myth debunked.

WHO IT'S FOR:

  • People with sensitive skin
  • People who are 'anti-wax' for whatever reason - such as being on Retin-A, Accutane or other medications that make them sensitive to the chemicals and process of waxing.
WHAT IT COSTS:

Threading typically can run anywhere from $12-50 - we charge $20 at Frinj. Call us and try it out! Be sure to ask for Simi.

If you want to see how it's done, and learn a little more about it before you try - here's a video from LatestBeauty.com:

What Hair Stylists Compete On

One thing's for sure. Stylists are COMPETITIVE. They all want the most clients, (happy ones of course) the best 'dos, the most ingenious ideas and style, the latest in trends and experience, education - and the coolest tools. Or - if we're talking about REALITY - the HOTTEST TOOLS.

I was getting my healthier tri-colored hair updated a few days ago, and was listening to the stylist chat about tools.

It seems, that the HOTTER the BETTER on the hairdryer, and these gals & guys will burn a hole right through your blue jeans to prove who's dryer blows the hottest! What's even crazier, is that I about burned my fingers off testing it. (I know, don't stick your hand in the piranha tank if you don't want to get bit, right?)

Ok, so maybe I'm exaggerating. Seriously, there were no flamin' dryers. But I learned a lot!

You really need be a professional to go for these ultra-hot styling tools. Sure, curling irons get hot, so do flat irons, etc - but these professional dryers do get REALLY hot. Hotter than I ever thought! You could absolutely cook your chicken dinner with some of these hair dryers.

That said, always pick a hair dryer you know you can handle. And, talk to your stylist about how and where to hold it, what settings to use, and how much to dry at a time for maximum control and results.

I was learning how to dry my hair properly, and noticed 'smoke' coming off of it. Kishia & Simi both promised me that it was the product - and not my hair. Thank goodness! It scared me enough to know TWO THINGS.

1/ I definitely wouldn't want a really hot dryer at home. I'll leave the really hot ones to the pro's at Frinj Salon & Spa.
2/ I definitely have more to learn about blow-drying.

Who knew it was such an art? Seriously! Like many things in life, there's a trick to it!

There are great personal dryers out there that will get the job done! Those are the ones for me.
